Frequent severe weather in winter is important to keep the ship stable

Published by December 16,2019

Vessel stability means that the ship tilts away from its initial equilibrium position under the action of external moment, and the ship has the ability to resist external force and to restore the original equilibrium state after the external moment is eliminated.

The stability requirements of container ships are generally higher than that of ordinary cargo ships. When the container ship is fully loaded, the wind area above the waterline of the ship is large, and the height of the center of gravity of the container is high, and the height of the center of gravity is greater than the height of the horizontal center of gravity when the container ship is fully loaded. This forces container ships to set up a large number of ballast water tanks in order to obtain airworthy stability, and the ballast water tanks are filled with water to meet the ship's stability requirements.

In order to ensure the stability of the water transportation safety situation in the area under jurisdiction and ensure the safety of life and property on the water, the maritime department puts forward the following safety management recommendations to relevant units and shipping companies.

1. Strengthen the safety inspection of ship loading and unloading. Each shipping company must do a good job of cargo safety inspection of domestic trade container ships. Individuals in the dock operation area and relevant units must attach great importance to the problems of lashing and stowage during the loading of ships, and strictly prevent overloading and unloading according to the loading plan To prevent inadequate stability and inadequate lashing.

2. Carry out professional training and safety education. Shipping companies should strengthen professional training and safety education for crew members, and improve their operational capabilities and standards. Combined with the "double-entry" activities of the typical accident cases of the Maritime Safety Administration, all the crew members of the unit were provided with case warning education, especially the publicity and education on the importance of ship stability calculation.

3. Do a good job of self-inspection before sailing. Shipping companies shall urge all ships to carry out self-inspection before sailing, do a good job in container lashing and securing, and ship ballasting, and calculate the ship's complete stability in strict accordance with the requirements of the Ship Stability Calculation Book. Especially for small container ships that do not have a ship loading instrument, while the initial stability calculation meets the requirements, they must also carefully calculate the dynamic stability and large inclination stability requirements, and fully grasp the stability of the subdivision and breakage of the ship, and respond scientifically. Bad weather such as strong winds and cold waves in autumn and winter ensure the safety of navigation and the safety of crew and property.
