Shipping from China to New York and Jersey Ports Rising in U.S. Rankings

Published by July 20,2022

The Ports of New York and New Jersey benefited from a growing trend of ocean carriers moving cargo through the U.S. East Coast to avoid congestion on the West Coast, making the port eighth in the Xinhua-Baltic Index ranking.

The port has been a big winner in the container trade as more logistics companies move away from the West Coast, where ports are grappling with congestion and inefficiencies. Its throughput surpasses Athens/Piraeus and ranks eighth in the index, which provides an independent ranking of the performance of the world's largest seaports/shipping business centers.

According to its port master plan, New York/New Jersey will handle just under 9 million TEUs in 2021, with a goal of increasing cargo throughput to 17 million TEUs by 2050.

In recent years, significant investment in port infrastructure upgrades has enabled it to meet the growing demands of the shipping industry and create a significant economic contribution to the region. This year, the facility has continued to record growth in monthly cargo volumes, with an average increase of 11% between January and May.

Maritime hubs are rated based on container cargo throughput, number of cranes, container berth length and channel depth. Other factors include the strength of maritime business services, including ship broking, ship management, ship finance, insurance and legal, as well as business environment factors such as tariffs, e-government services and logistics performance.

As the maritime industry continues to become more resilient and future-proof, Orglinklog freight forward will continue to work with freight forwarders around the world to provide customers with better freight forwarding services.
