Air Cargo Summary Report 2019

Published by January 08,2020

The air freight rates of major east-west trade routes at the end of 2019 are lower than 2018 levels, but from a longer-term perspective, the situation is more optimistic.

Data from the TAC Index show that in December 2018, the price of services from Hong Kong to North America decreased by 22.6% from last year, with an average of US $ 3.62 per kg.

Freight from Hong Kong to Europe fell 10% that month to $ 3.15 per kilo.

The performance of these two transactions is consistent with recent months, reflecting the overall decline in the air cargo market in 2019.

Although the drop in prices compared to 2018 may not be good news for airlines-coupled with an anticipated 2.2% year-on-year drop in freight volumes-the overall performance in 2019 is still good compared to recent years.

In 2018, the average price of both lines reached the second highest level since 2015.

The average price of the Hong Kong-North America route in 2019 is $ 3.54 per kilo. This number is lower than the level of US $ 4.11 per kilogram in 2018, but slightly higher than US $ 3.53 per kilogram in 2017, US $ 2.82 per kilogram in 2016 and US $ 3.40 per kilogram in 2015.

In Hong Kong and Europe, the average price in 2019 was $ 2.75 per kg, which was lower than $ 2.82 per kg in 2018, but higher than $ 2.41 per kg in 2017, $ 2.14 per kg in 2016 and per kg in 2015 $ 2.57.

Looking ahead, Derivatives Brokers Freight Investor Services (FIS) said that indicators are improving over the next 12 months.
